Woo Hoo! I'm happy again because the next day after resetting my Xbox profile and reloading it my services seem to work and now my apps are downloading; that is until tonight December 05, 2014. In the middle of 'Criminal Minds' S3E2 my Xbox dropped Xbox Live with no warning or lag. After several attempts-logging in and logging out-Xbox would not connect. I jumped on the computer to go to the www.xbox.com/networkhelp to see what was going on. Xbox did have an alert that stated "Xbox Live Core Services Limited". This alert was specific to logging into profiles, downloading apps, launching apps and certain games.
My XBOX LIVE hasn't been working for hours and hackers by the name LIZARD SQUAD is taking claim for the service outage. "What a lovely night to kick back and watch some Netflix on the Xbox" I thought to myself as I pulled my perfectly baked and crisp chicken wings out of the oven. I sat down with my plate of wings, broccoli, a few french fries and a glass of crystal light-pink lemonade. I grabbed the remotes-the TV remote and the Xbox remote-got everything powered on and began to watch a few episodes of 'CRIMINAL MINDS'.
'Criminal Minds' has been my favorite show on Netflix to watch these past two weeks. I play a few games on my Xbox but I mainly use it for streaming Netflix and others such as Hulu Plus, Crackle and Amazon Instant Video. I even purchase a movie every now and then from Xbox video.
Lately my Xbox has been tripping. I haven't been able to stay connected for more than 30mins or so at a time, especially at night. I kept saying that Xbox was taking down our service because they wanted us to purchase the Xbox One during the holidays; so they want us to think something is wrong with our boxes. Unfortunately at the time I didn't think to get online to see if anyone else was having this issue. I just assumed it was our internet connection because we kept getting an error saying we had no network connection at all, although no other devices in my home were having connection issue.
In order to fix the problem after several days of researching and almost 4 weeks of service here and there we come across instructions for network connection issues on the Xbox website. The instructions said that we needed to delete our profile and our profile only and then clear our cache a minimum of three times. We did this and for the rest of the night we couldn't play our apps or download them. It wasn't until the next day that our services started working again.
After seeing Xbox's alerts I went straight to Goolge to search for terms such as Xbox down now or not working. As soon as I pressed enter I saw articles referencing to hackers who have taken the credit for taking down Xbox Live. The group taking the credit for this outage of thousands and thousands of users call themselves LIZARD SQUAD. It is said that the LIZARD SQUAD has put Xbox under DDOS, a distributed denial of service attack. They also took to twitter on December 2, 2014 taking claims for the DDOS against Microsoft that day also. I don't know how much of this they have been doing even before Thanksgiving but I've been having sign in problems and connection issues for weeks and it simply got worse and worse.
Tonight services came back up for about 30 minutes after being down for over an hour and went right back out again; as of this post we still can't access our Xbox Live. What will Xbox do about these hackers? The way the service is acting it definitely seems like an attack, especially with the amount of users not able to log on tonight. I jumped on twitter (#xboxlive) after checking out the status of Xbox on http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/live.xbox.com.html. On both twitter and isitdownrightnow.com comments were flying in about the outage. But there were others who thought the same thing I've been thinking for weeks. Maybe, just maybe, Xbox simply wants me to purchase a new Xbox One. Humm...
