Tonight I watched the UFC182 fight event. This is one fight that has been well advertised and pumped up-UFC Light Heavy Weight Champion JON JONES vs. DANIEL CORMIER! This was said to be one of the biggest fights of the year especially because these two champions, in their own right, don't like each other at all. Daniel Cormier has said in several interviews that Jon Jones is prideful and that the people deserve a new champion.
After tonight Jon Jones has defended his title eight times. Jones came out tonight to "It's Getting Hot in Here" by Nelly and also a mix of other songs including "The Champ Is Here" by Jay Z. Something came across as odd about Jones tonight but maybe we can chalk it up to him just automatically assuming he was going to win. Round one between Jones and Cormier seemed to start off slow, surprisingly. To me Cormier seemed to be ready but already exhausted and rightfully so; the hype of this event I'm sure weighed down on both fighters. As the rounds continue, both fighters eventually going all five rounds with no knock out, Jones and Cormier both got each other down to the floor a few times with the intent to achieve TAKE DOWN.
MY OPINION: I was really disappointed in this fight. I felt that it was too much holding, especially on Jones' part. I was rooting for Cormier for the win but regardless I'm willing to give props where props are due. I felt this fight was boring and underwhelming. My initial reaction was that neither fighter should be happy with their performance. I do understand that Cormier had to defend himself with all the holds with Jones trying to get him on the TAKE DOWN/SUBMISSION earlier on in the first three rounds. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fighter and have no idea the discipline and level of energy it takes to fight on any level but I can only image so there is no disrespect towards either fighter but I watched the preliminary fights and I felt many of those fights where better. Several preliminary fights were intense and a lot of the guys had more to prove especially among the fighters competing in UFC for the first time. To me I felt like Jones didn't go out with the heart to give his all but with the strategy to gain points and drain the clock with holding. For the most part I was disappointed.
POST PRESS CONFERENCE: Jones took the win with the score 49 to Cormier's 46. Cormier took the high ground and admitted his loss. He also stated that he didn't know how to judge a fight after being asked if he felt the points should have been closer. Cormier admitted that some rounds for him were strong but there were others that he didn't win over Jones. -Monica/TVandPopcorn
