The Following Season 3 Episode 6 "Reunion" finally took me to the edge of my seat as the show did back in Season 1. For me Carroll wasn't the bonus, but the addition of another fellow mass murderer deemed as Arthur Strauss' BEST STUDENT made THE FOLLOWING interesting again. I'm always going to root for the good guys, which in this case is the FBI and Ryan Hardy who have been working hard to solve a string of random murders by psychopathic killers who worships other psychopathic killers who have mastered the art of killing and getting away with it. What made "Reunion" so interesting is the reveal that Joe Carroll who has given Ryan Hardy a run for his money, relationships and sanity, is not Arthur Strauss' best student.
Arthur Strauss, we found out in Season 2, is a teacher/mentor to psychopathic serial killers. Strauss himself, being a doctor, has found more pleasure in watching his patients die and suffer than helping them to live. With his passion for killing Strauss decided to go a step further and seek out and mentor others like him how to master the art of killing which includes finding a way of doing it without getting caught. Strauss was disappointed in Carol for going so public with his killings and seeking him out for help which eventually lead to his capture. Strauss this season was behind bars and awaiting trail but with some help from his law team and his best student THEO (Michael Ealy), Strauss was able to walk out of the courtroom a free man due to a lack of evidence but Strauss' freedom was short lived.
THEO: Theo, Arthur Strauss' best student wanted to master all forms of killing. In this episode "Reunion" I personally thought that Strauss was trying to become a mentor to someone who was already mastering his own techniques. I believe Theo wanted Strauss to feel he had impacted his life but Theo's earlier reactions to Strauss, to me, already displayed a dislike. Strauss contacted Theo to help him plant some evidence on the FBI database that would question the FBI'S credibility during his trial. Theo has not only mastered killing but he's good with technology which makes him an even bigger threat especially for the FBI because he's able to erase his digital footprints. By the end of "Reunion" Theo had done everything Strauss asked. He was supposed to also deliver IDs and passports to Strauss and fellow follower Daisy. Once Theo arrived at Strauss' hidden location in the woods, provided by another student of Strauss, Duncan Banks, Theo greeted Strauss with a smile and a hug; while hugging Strauss, Theo strangled him to death. As Theo strangled Strauss he uttered his reasoning for doing so which all boiled down to Strauss exposing his followers to save his own life in which Theo called being selfish and not being a true father figure or teacher because a father sacrifices himself for his children.
Interesting: After Theo killed Strauss I wondered why he would come out of hiding just to kill Strauss. In my opinion I'd say it was because Theo knew that Strauss could track him down if he turned down his call for help. Maybe Theo thought that was the only way to eliminate all threats. Theo killing Strauss wasn't the only shocker about Theo coming into the picture but it was one of the final scene's reveal that he has a wife and two kids waiting for him at home. From the looks of it his family just thinks he's called out of town for work when he's gone for long extended periods of time. He has a great cover for himself and doesn't appear to want to be a part of a cult following just out killing as they are told but he seems to have his own way of doing things. Does this make Theo a threat to those who are a part of the following? Has Joe Carroll ever met him? Does Theo know or like Joe Carroll? These are some of the questions that ran through my mind as Ryan Hardy walked into Carroll's jail cell at the end of the episode to inquire about, as he said "Strauss' BEST STUDENT". -Monica/TVandPopcorn
